| Policy to support the next generation |
|
The Federation welcomes warmly the many initiatives and measures supporting youth which were set out in the Chief Executive's Policy Address yesterday. They represent commitment to nurturing young people through education from early childhood to university, with career planning for meaningful employment and holistic development. At the same time, the Address reminded us that youth needs a voice and an outlet for expressing their views.
In particular, we were very pleased to find pledges which increase subsidized university places as well as a review and re-establishment of vocational education. As an integrated part of strengthened life planning these will help youth maximize their potential. The implementation of such pledges in the near future would greatly enhance their opportunities for social mobility.
Nurturing the next generation in terms of education and employment will also help youth define and fulfill their aspirations. However, this can be achieved most effectively if they also have a voice, a clear channel for communicating their views and the opportunity for dialogue with policy makers. In this the Federation makes its own contribution with regular programmes in which they have this chance. It is a chance they deserve and one which we, with our partners, strive to give them.

12-24 year-olds are welcome to enter this digital drawing competition organized by uTouch online outreach counselling team at the Media Counselling Centre. Deadline 7 February. Guest speakers are Ms Blanche Tang Oi-lam, (Media Veteran) , and Ms Kitty Yeung (Educational Psychologist), 3-5pm on 18 January. Cultural Oasis sharing sessions with scholars and collectors at HKFYG Museum
Scholars, collectors and up-and-coming young artists will share their knowledge in this monthly series at the HKFYG museum. The first speaker is Professor David Lung Ping-yee, Department of Architecture, University of Hong Kong on World Cultural Heritage and You.

Zonta Club of Hong Kong East sponsors video film scheme:
No To Violence Against Women
Funding from Zonta Club of Hong Kong East of HK$200,000 will enable this subsidized mini-video film scheme to be officially launched in February. Proposals are called for and shortlisted applicants will be interviewed. The top 8 youth production teams will receive up to HK$10,000 for 3-8-minute short films. These will be screened, viewed online, or used as teaching aids to reduce violence against women. Winning films will be promoted in September 2014. Contact CK Chow, tel 3979 0040, for more details.

HKFYG Standard Chartered Hong Kong English Public Speaking Contest 2014 with Speaking Enhancement Workshops, Practice Sessions
600 entrants attended public speaking workshops last month, with Mr Vic She and Mr Talis Wong from Toastmasters International as trainers. Sir TL Yang English Language Ambassadors also gave tips in practice sessions. Preliminary Rounds will begin this month and the Grand Finals will be on 22 February. Congratulations to HKFYG Jockey Club Sai Kung Outdoor Training Camp and VUE: 2nd runner-up in Hong Kong Heart Short Video Competition
A short film promoting nature conservation and facilities at the HKFYG Jockey Club Sai Kung Outdoor Training Camp was produced by video production company, VUE. VUE entered the film in the third annual Hong Kong Heart Short Video Competition and it was 2nd runner-up (open category).
