International language success at national competition
Fantastic news: at one of the mainland's most prestigious English public speaking competitions, winners at the 2013 HKFYG Standard Chartered Hong Kong English Public Speaking Contest have just been a great success. One of them was chosen as the national Champion of the Junior division.
Congratulations go to four locally born English language learners who competed with outstanding results against 200,000 students from all over China. Siu Chun-kit, a 12 year-old student at Hong Kong's Singapore International School, achieved a resounding victory as Champion of the Junior division at the China Daily "21st Century Coca-Cola Cup" National English Speaking Competition in Xiamen on 22-23 March 2013. He was followed by Ton Yeh, a 1st prize winner in the same division. In the Senior division Tiffany Ip Wing-yi was 2nd Runner-up and Alex Wong Wai-yin was a 2nd prize winner. All of them deserve a round of applause for their achievements.
Not only have these students shown that Hong Kong young people's skills as public speakers in a second language are very strong indeed, they will also serve as role models for other students of English. This will surely give a boost to all those whose future and jobs require confidence in the internationally recognized language of global business and diplomacy. Well done!

Speech assessment sessions in March and April 2013
at HKFYG Youth Assessment and Development Centre
There will be speech assessment sessions on 25 March and 10 April 2013 at the HKFYG Youth Assessment and Development Centre on 23/F, Congregation House, 119 Leighton Road, Causeway Bay. Experienced speech therapist, Ms Doris Wong will conduct the assessments for 2-12 year-olds. Those in need of therapy can then join group training sessions for speech and social skills which will be run by Ms Wong from 19 April to 31 May at the Assessment Centre. Youthline 2777 8899 recruits volunteer peer hotline and web-based counsellors
for M21 Media Counselling Centre
Peer counsellors for 6-24 year-olds are needed at HKFYG's M21 Media Counselling Centre in Aberdeen from May-October 2013. They should be aged 18+ and of a cheerful, mature and patient disposition. The project starts with 3-day training sessions on basic counselling principles and theories, to equip the young volunteers with suitable skills. The training workshop fee is HK$ 200. Then from May to October, the volunteers will give hotline and online counseling, providing emotional support and advice for callers. HKFYG Jockey Club International a cappella Festival continues
with The House Jacks in the City Hall Concert Hall on 2 April
The one and only House Jacks will be on stage at 8pm on Tuesday 2 April in the 2013 a cappella Master Series. Their performance will reveal just how skilfully an original rock band can make music without any instruments. At over 3,000 shows around the world they have energized and inspired live audiences, with innovative riffs and harmonies that helped lay the groundwork for the current a cappella renaissance. YOUTH HONG KONG March 2013 on poverty:
the wealth gap, the N-Nothings, the working, young and elderly poor

The new issue of Youth Hong Kong is about the causes and effects of poverty and the wealth gap. Ho Hei-wah of the Society for Community Organization, Nelson Chow of the University of Hong Kong and Chua Hoi-wai of the Hong Kong Council of Social Service are all pessimistic about major improvements in the lot of the poor in the near future, despite the re-establishment of the Commission on Poverty. Nonetheless, there is new commitment to tackling the problems. Social exclusion of the elderly, the young and the working poor, the stigma of applying for means-tested CSSA, the conditions endured by cage-dwellers, street-sleepers and the N-nothings: all are discussed in forums and personal perspectives, in statistics and profiles.

Private tutoring poll survey from HKFYG's Youth Research Centre
In Hong Kong, numbers in private tuition have almost doubled since 1996 to over 63%. Time spent in private tuition has also risen rapidly from about 3 to 5 hours per week. Nearly 70% of respondents said their academic performance improved as a result. Reasons for private tuition are also changing. A very significant increase was found in those who have private tuition to help them achieve their personal best rather than just an improvement. This number has gone from zero in 1996 to over 25% in 2012. However, the proportion wanting tutoring simply "to improve academic performance" was still the largest at 37.8%, even though the number has dropped from 70.7% in 1996. Few students find private tuition enjoyable. They say it causes peer pressure and 71% said that if others took private tuition when they did not, they felt pressure to conform.
