Revitalizing Fanling Magistracy:
for leadership and a new lease of life
The new HKFYG Institute for Leadership Development, announced to the general public last week, will revitalize the historic former Fanling Magistracy as a centre for leadership education and skills training. Utilization of the features of the former magistracy - such as adaptation of the old courtrooms for students to practice public speaking - symbolizes the continuity of past, present and future, instilling in young people the core values of leadership and commitment to Hong Kong.
Revitalizing heritage sites is an important part of Hong Kong's development and this is a vision that we share. We believe that young people, when they are anchored in their history and tradition, can establish a firm foundation and identity to look into the future with confidence. The HKFYG Institute for Leadership Development is the Federation's first adaptive reuse of a historic revitalization project to provide services for young people and we very much hope we have other similar opportunities in future. |

Project IAPT offers new community-based services with Beat Drugs Fund for youth at risk
Funding of some $2.28 million from the Beat Drugs Fund is enabling this joint HKFYG and Kwai Chung Hospital project to run from May 2013 to April 2015. The main service districts will be Kowloon East and New Territories, East and West. Improved Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) for youth at high risk of drug abuse or associated mental health problems is at the core of the project. It can fill the gap in services that exists at present and will provide therapy in community settings at an early stage. It is believed that Project IAPT can also help reduce the labelling effect of drug abuse. Call Wilson or Bob, tel 3755 7064 for more details.

Environment and Conservation Fund enables HKFYG to initiate 3-year greening programme
HKFYG is committed to transforming itself into a greener youth organization and has partnered the Environment and Conservation Fund for a 3-year greening programme. Technical advice, assistance in the development of long-term capacity building, a carbon footprint survey and energy and carbon audit are to be conducted by an environmental consultant. These will result in the establishment of key performance indicators for carbon, electricity, paper, water and waste reduction. Watch this space for more on the greening of HKFYG. Youth Business Hong Kong young entrepreneurs inspired by Dr Lawrence Fung's talk about entrepreneurship
On 26 February in HKFYG headquarters building in North Point, over 100 young people aged 18-35 who are interested in doing business or are already running their own companies had a great night listening to Dr Lawrence Fung, Founder and Chairman of the Hong Kong Economic Times Holdings Ltd. The talk was the second seminar in the series entitled Dialogues with Successful Entrepreneurs in the Love Ideas Love Hong Kong Project. Grand Finals: 10th Anniversary HKFYG Standard Chartered Hong Kong English Public Speaking Contest
The Champions in the Grand Finals were Gregory Gannen Wong in the Junior Division, which focused on the environment, and Alexander Wong Wai Yin in the Senior Division, which addressed tensions between Hong Kong and Mainland China. Both boys are at La Salle College. Judges included Mr Benjamin Hung, Executive Director & Chief Executive Officer of Standard Chartered (Hong Kong) Ltd, Mr Anthony Chow, Steward of The Hong Kong Jockey Club, Ms Lydia Trotter, Consul (Political - Economic), Australian Consulate-General Hong Kong, Ms Nini Forino, Director of Public Affairs Session of U.S. Consulate General Hong Kong and Macau. Gregory will represent Hong Kong in the International Public Speaking Contest in London and 2 winners from each division will represent Hong Kong in the 21st Century Cup National High School and Primary School English Public Speaking Competition on the mainland in March. Hong Kong FLL cum Jr.FLL Robotics Tournament
More than 500 students from 39 secondary, primary schools and education centres
took part in the tournament on Saturday 23 February. The theme for the older students in this year's tournament was Senior Solutions and their aim was to solve problems experienced in the daily lives of elderly people. They wrote software to drive toy robots in 14 tasks to help senior citizens. The theme for the junior section, Jr.FLL, was Super Seniors. These students build towers out of LEGO bricks and designed promotional posters for them. The Senior Primary Division Champion's Award went to the Diocesan Boys' School Primary Division (A), the Junior Secondary Division Champion's Award was won by Carmel Secondary School and the Jr.FLL Champion's Award was taken by the Hong Kong and Macau Lutheran Church Primary School.
