Helping the Poor
At the beginning of a new calendar year thoughts naturally turn to new beginnings. With the rejuvenation of the Commission on Poverty, there is cause for cautious optimism that ways to tackle deeply-rooted poverty will emerge. Federation social workers in Tin Shui Wai Youth S.P.O.Ts give very direct assessment of problems.
'4-6 year-olds come to the Youth SPOT at night with their siblings. Their clothes are ragged and their shoes are falling apart. Their parents are not at home and they have nothing to eat. Sometimes they have had no breakfast or lunch either. We give them food and look after them till closing time at 10pm. Then we need neighbourhood support systems.'
'We set up schemes for neighbourhood mutual aid － a network for low income parents and those on CSSA. Exclusion is one of the worst side effects of poverty. The families can become ostracised by the community so we organised networks in each block at Tin Shui Wai.'
The most important things the social workers say they give to children of low-income families are time, encouragement and recognition for the efforts they make 'What they need most is care, attention and opportunities. We try to give it in every way possible.' |

A big hand for Outstanding Volunteer Awards 2012
HKFYG was 3rd runner-up in the Social Welfare Department Public Organizations Highest Service Hours Award 2011 and received recognition last month. Congratulations to our volunteers who contributed over 700,000 service hours during the year. The award ceremony was on 15 December 2012, at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Launch of 2013 "Learn and Leap - Teen's Action" after successful partnership
with Employees Retraining Board
This HKFYG Youth Employment Network programme, partnered by the Employees Retraining Board (ERB), went into its second year in December. It has a quota of 2,500 and targets mainly Secondary 6 graduates of 2013. There are 4 parts: Career Planning Seminars, Industrial Taster Courses, Interview Skill Workshops and Workplace Experience Programmes. Participation results in better understanding of the world of work, career aspirations, plus knowledge of entry and job requirements in different fields. These enhance participants' abilities for study and career planning. Admission is free on a first-come-first-served basis. The Felix Wong Youth Improvement Award calls for nomination
The Felix Wong Youth Improvement Award was set up to give formal recognition to local secondary school students who have made a great effort to overcome hardship or misfortune. The winners chosen on nomination by school principals, teachers and social workers are given scholarships to pursue personal development. Nominations now welcome! Chinese Youth Film Contest deadline for entries 17 February
This Federation contest sponsored by Sony is held for the second year. Leading industry figures will act as judges, including actors, directors and designers from Hong Kong, mainland China and Taiwan. Their criteria include film content, creativity, technical skills and potential impact.
The contest deadline is 17 February 2013; votes cast online between 20 February and 3 March and adjudication will take place in March. 22 prizes will be given in April for Best Visual Effects in both the Advertisement Section and the Drama Section. 2012/13 Hong Kong Green Mech Contest
Sponsored by Innovation and Technology Commission and supported by Babyboom Co, Ltd, The Federation is organizing the 2012/13 Green Mech Contest on 26 January in 2013, at Tsuen Wan Discovery Park, with the venue sponsorship provided by Discovery Park Commercial Services Ltd. The Contest aims to enhance youngsters' knowledge and application of different science principles and green energy concepts in mechanism design and technology. Over 200 students from 40 primary and secondary schools would participate in the competition to design and build their own models which involves different science principles and renewable energy. Coffee machines and drink packs from Kolb (H.K.) Ltd.
24 sets of 3-in-1 chocolate, coffee and tea latte machines with powdered drink packs, were donated to the Federation by Kolb (H.K.) Ltd. HKFYG's 21 Youth S.P.O.Ts, M21 Media Counselling Centre, Youth Assessment and Development Centre and Youth Exchange Unit will use them to serve Hong Kong's needy young people. Project Bridge sponsored by the Keswick Foundation
Sincere thanks are due to the Keswick Foundation for its generous sponsorship over $5.75 million of Project Bridge. It will run for three years from 1 February 2013 to 31 January 2016 mainly in New Territories West (Kwai Tsing, Tsuen Wan, Tuen Mun and Yuen Long) to facilitate youths with specific learning disabilities who are studying or between jobs to understand their career aptitude and employment competency, assist them to accumulate working experience and ultimately enhance their employment opportunities. "Star" Ferry, Tourism Commission and Hong Kong Association for Customer Service Excellence with HKFYG on Fairy Ferry Christmas harbour tour
For the 9th year, HKFYG and the Tourism Commission joined hand to organize the Fairy Ferry on 24 and 25 December, with the Hong Kong Association for Customer Service Excellence as co-organizer, and full support of "Star" Ferry Co, Ltd. Around 100 of our Hong Kong Young Ambassadors (HKYAs) gathered at Tsim Sha Tsui Ferry Pier on 24 and 25 December 2012 to celebrate Christmas with tourists and local people. HKFYG volunteers provided services in Zhongshan
5 volunteer leaders led 21 volunteers on a journey to Zhongshan Sanxiang during 29-31 Dec 2012 in order to have a more meaningful Christmas holiday. They stayed in the HKFYG's Zhongshan's Mansion and this is the very first time HKFYG's Youth Volunteer Network (YVN) working with Zhongshan Sanxiang Volunteers Association. The volunteers worked together to hold a birthday party for the elderly in Zhongshan with games and performances. Volunteers from Hong Kong also prepared the blanket and heated bottle to the elderly to against the cold winter. Contact Emily Wong, tel 2169 0032, for more details.

REDspot Countdown Concert jointly organized by seven HKFYG Youth S.P.O.Ts
Federation's seven Youth S.P.O.Ts, namely Jockey Club Wang Tau Hom Youth S.P.O.T., Jockey Club Jat Min Youth S.P.O.T., LOHAS Youth S.P.O.T., Tai Po Lions Youth S.P.O.T., Tsuen Wan Youth S.P.O.T., Tsuen King Youth S.P.O.T. and Jockey Club Ping Shek Youth S.P.O.T. jointly organized the REDspot New Year's Eve countdown concert on 31 December 2012 at Tai Po Lions Youth S.P.O.T. More than 20 groups from 11 Youth S.P.O.Ts performed in front of an audience of 400 young people, who also celebrated the beginning of 2013 together.
