Arts appreciation plus education
|
For the past two years, the Federation has held a Charity Auction of Chinese arts and artefacts to raise funds for youth services. However, the auction serves another purpose as well.
To complement the auction of so many high quality pieces from Lisa's Collection, the Federation is using the opportunity to create a learning platform for young people. They are invited to take a course given by Mrs Lisa Cheung Chung Lai-seung, to learn the inherent value of jade and ceramics, such as those |
being auctioned, and to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the history, culture and tradition that surrounds outstanding pieces. What adds to the knowledge and fun is that it also gives young participants the opportunity to take part in an actual auction.
This year's auction will be held on Sunday 9 December from 10am onwards, at the HKFYG Museum, 5/F, Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups Building, 21 Pak Fuk Road, North Point. You are also most welcome to the Preview on Saturday 8 December from 10am to 8pm at the same venue.
Do come and have a look. You never know, you might find the perfect gift for yourself or a loved one.

Visiting My Neighbours Programme
On Sunday 23 December 2012, in the Piazza of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, the Visiting My Neighbours Programme will be launched at 11am. The ceremony will be followed by Neighbourhood Team visits by 500 young people to 1,000 families in 13 districts. The team members will be able to show they care, offer Christmas gifts and invite family members to join a lunch gathering and celebrate the Lunar New Year together. All the HKFYG Youth SPOTs will be involved and the home visits will be in Eastern, Kowloon City, Kwai Tsing, Kwun Tong, North District, Sai Kung, Sham Shui Po, Shatin, Tai Po, Tsuen Wan, Tuen Mun, Wong Tai Sin, and Yuen Long.. CLD series on leadership skills continues until 15 December
This series of talks by professionals speakers includes Ms Jennifer Ma, co-founder of ARCH Academy, whose last session on Interview Skills in a Nutshell takes place this coming Sunday, December 9, 2012, 2-5pm at The Boys' and Girls' Club Association of Hong Kong in Wan Chai. Mr Edgar So, Head of Programming of i-Cable News Ltd, concludes the series with his last talk on the Power of Digital Storytelling on Saturday 15 December.

New Open Division in Hong Kong Student Science Project Competition
deadline for all applicants 10 January 2013
The aim of the Hong Kong Student Science Project Competition, supported by the Innovation and Technology Commission, Education Bureau, Hong Kong Science Museum, and Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, is to encourage students to apply both their knowledge of science and their creative flair. There are various activities throughout the year, culminating with the finals in the summer. All students aged 18- 25 (born between 8 April 1988 and 8 April 1995) who have completed secondary school are eligible for the newly introduced Open Division. Applications can be submitted online. Youth Crime Prevention Centre reviews "Project R" with Hong Kong Police Force New Territories South Regional Crime Prevention Office, Kwai Ching Police Station, Tsing Yi Police Station, and Tsuen Wan Police Station
Project R is run by the HKFYG Youth Crime Prevention Centre (YCPC) in Kwai Chung and Tsuen Wan. The Hong Kong Police refer youth who have been arrested to YCPC, where the aim is to help prevent them committing further crimes and to provide counselling. Their most common crimes involve theft, violence and triads. The project has been supported by

partners, the Hong Kong Police Force New Territories South Regional Crime Prevention Office, Kwai Ching Police Station, Tsing Yi Police Station, and Tsuen Wan Police Station. 115 young arrested persons were referred by the police from June-November 2012. Dr Ng Yin-ling of Hong Kong Shue Yan University kindly worked with their parents to enhance family communication and interaction. Parent-child Mediation Centre visit to The Peak with needy families supported by The Peak Hong Kong, The Peak Tower, Madame Tussauds Hong Kong and VTC Alumni Team
Last Sunday 2 December, and again next Sunday 9 December, groups of new arrivals from the mainland have sponsorship from The Peak Tower, Madame Tussauds Hong Kong, and the VTC Alumni Volunteer Service Team to see the attractions on The Peak, one of Hong Kong's tourist highlights. Participants included mainland mothers and other family members from low-income households who are attending sessions with social workers at the HKFYG Parent-child Mediation Centre. The purpose is to promote happiness, strengthen interaction and relationships among the members of new immigrant families and give them a memorable, happy experience. Youth Business Hong Kong has a booth and will run seminars and talks at this major expo organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and held at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre from 6-8 December. Dialogue, practice and passion: HKFYG helps to co-organize Second Youth Counselling Conference with University of Hong Kong
The Federation is one of the co-organizers of the Second Youth Counselling Conference: Dialogue, Practice and Passion, at the University of Hong Kong, 6-8 December 2012. The aims of the conference are to offer a platform for practitioners, young people, scholars and researchers to share their insight and experience of youth counselling. A dynamic, interactive display, Youth Counselling - Now and in Future, will be put on by HKFYG's counselling units on 7 December, to explain to participants the development of the Federation's youth counselling services and new approaches being used. Youth Hong Kong December 2012 & Youth SPOT Magazine number 15.
Has the creative spark become disconnected and disjointed in Hong Kong because of lack of commitment and direction? Maybe we could do more in search for creative excellence but the general outlook is optimistic. Both magazines explore complementary perspectives on the subject this month. Available soon.
