HKFYG'S LEAD goes to Shanghai
Imagine teachers admitting they are 'not the experts anymore.' Well, that's exactly what's happening with an educational programme from HKFYG. The programme is called LEAD and it has not only students, but educators excited. Being introduced by the Federation to about 100 Shanghai schools this week, LEAD captures the imagination, gives students a taste of the creative process, and builds a community that learns by doing.
The Federation's LEAD (Learning through Engineering, Art and Design) Project, launched in 2005, has enjoyed endorsement from many Hong Kong teachers. It advocates time to play, with curiosity and discovery. It shows how much can be learned with science, technology and multimedia. 'This project lets the students think outside the box,' said a teacher from St Paul's Co-educational (Macdonnell Road) Primary School. 'That's something which is still very rare in the traditional educational context. It gives them self-confidence because they create something new.' At Wa Ying College, teachers in a design class challenged students faced with an open-ended LEAD problem, to 'just make it work.'
LEAD workshops in Shanghai this week are being led by HKFYG trainers and Michael Smith-Welch from the MIT Media Lab Scratch team, where the concept originated. Smith-Welch explained, 'LEAD is about learning through an iterative process, which means it's fine to start over as many times as you like with no pain.' One of the outcomes of learning like this is that it helps you take surprise in your stride. In a world of constant, rapid change that is a great bonus. 'To be prepared against surprise is to be trained. To be prepared for surprise is to be educated.'*

Community-based recycling reinforces good habits at Youth S.P.O.Ts
The Federation is committed to nurturing a life-long habit of waste recycling, and to increasing the recovery of waste. Therefore, we are part of community-based collection programmes launched by the Environment and Protection Department. This has enabled us to set up the collection points at 20 Youth SPOTs and from early December 2012, cleaned waste plastics, glass, and small electrical or electronic equipment will be welcome at our recycle bins. Charity Auction courtesy of Lisa's Collection at HKFYG Museum 8-9 December
HKFYG is organizing a Charity Auction with Lisa's Collection at the new HKFYG Museum on 5/F HKFYG Building in early December. Preview Saturday 8 December, 10am-8pm. Auction begins 10am Sunday 9 December. We are very grateful to Mr Zhou Nanquan and Mr Li Huibing for issuing appraisal certificates for some auction items, and to Sun Ming Transportation Company Ltd for offering discount professional transport. Over 150 pieces of fine ceramics, jade & jadeite, ornaments and jewellery will be auctioned. The event is complemented by a course on appreciating Chinese antiques and works of art by Mrs Lisa Cheung Chung Lai-seung from 17-26 December. Hong Kong Melody Makers Season Opening Concerts 2012

The HKFYG Hong Kong Melody Makers have 2 major concerts this autumn. The first, sponsored by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and supported by the Hong Kong Institute of Education Department of Cultural and Creative Arts was at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall on 23 October. 800 kids say Protect Our Ocean with image of Chinese white dolphin at Repulse Bay with Ocean Recovery Alliance, Bonza Pie Ltd, The Malibu Foundation for Environmental Education and Spectral Q Aerial Art
Kids Ocean Day creates environmental awareness with a Human Aerial Art spectacle on Friday 9 November at Repulse Bay beach. Ocean Recovery Alliance, with HKFYG, Bonza Pie Ltd, The Malibu Foundation for Environmental Education and Spectral Q Aerial Art organized this educational programme, the first of its kind in Asia. Click here for a full list of partners and sponsors. The goal is to raise awareness of Hong Kong youth about the importance of a healthy ocean and ecosystem. The programme starts with a drawing competition for selected schools and the winning design, encapsulating the message of ocean protection, is being re-created on the beach by 800 children as a piece of human aerial art, photographed from the air. Hang Seng Green Carnival encourages low carbon lifestyle

young people nominated by HKFYG will join the Hang Seng Green Carnival. The fun programme will include decorating the penthouse. LEAD organizes Creative Education Forum and Scratch Workshops for Shanghai China Odyssey of the Mind Association and Education Bureau of Huangpu District Shanghai
LEAD (Learning through Engineering, Art & Design) was invited by the Shanghai China Odyssey of the Mind Association and Education Bureau of Huangpu District Shanghai to organize the Creative Education Forum and Scratch Workshops for educators in Shanghai on 7 and 8 November. Exchange of ideas about innovative teaching and learning with Scratch software, plus three workshops for about 100 teachers will facilitate the integration of Scratch software into the school curriculum. HKFYG Hong Kong Green Mech Contest at Eco Expo Asia 2012
Winning teams of the 2011-2012 HKFYG Hong Kong Green Mech Contest from Queen's College and Tai Po Old Market Public School (Plover Cove) were at the Eco Expo Asia 2012 Sunday Green Mart on 28 October. Eco Expo Asia is the region's leading trade fair for environmental protection products, services and technologies, and is a platform for green business in Asia. Lamma Island tragedy Fire Services Department rescue team on M21 online TV
| The Lamma Island ferry disaster, still in many people's minds a month after the tragedy occurred, is the subject of a recent HKFYG M21 online TV programme. M21 Live invited members of the Fire Services Department rescue team to share their life-or-death decisions and life education with youth. Remembering the enormous pressure involved in such decisions, Fireman Wong Tsz-kiu said, 'It was just a matter of seconds…. I just wanted to save as many people as possible.'
