DIY Apps
It's a very rare young person in Hong Kong who has never heard of an app. The majority have, by now, probably downloaded or used at least one or two. With hundreds of thousands of apps already available for the iPhone and tens of thousands for other platforms, the range of content is immense. From education and learning, to fun and leisure, apps exist for hobbies, information, news and service provision.
One of the most exciting features of apps is their potential for innovation and creative self-development by the young people who use them most. Given this reality, we at the Federation are committed to ensuring that the technology is available as widely as possible to youth in the community.
Next month, the Federation's M21 will offer a new course for those who want to learn about mobile apps for the Android platform, including youngsters from less advantaged backgrounds who may not yet have much firsthand experience of the latest technology.
While we also develop our own apps to offer services, maintain connectivity with our target group and keep pace with fast-changing mobile technology, we encourage all our partners to help support these initiatives, to make certain that no young person gets left behind on the digital highway.

Exciting new courses this autumn at HKFYG's M21, the media centre funded by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust
M21, the new media education centre that HKFYG has set up in Shek Pai Wan, is launching a range of exciting new courses this autumn. Targeting young people from Secondary 3 upwards, the courses include training for media production, modelling, hosting, campus TV and broadcasting in English, Putonghua and Cantonese. Project 'GOAL FAITH' - how to gain faith in yourself and set goals for the future
This project was designed by the Federation's School Social Work Unit to restore the motivation and self-confidence of junior secondary students wrestling with frustration and pressures. It consisted of adventure-based activities at a simply furnished camp. Participants learned how to build on their strengths and develop latent talent. Amazed at their capacity to stretch their limits and solve problems, they went on to take part in a workshop designed for inner reflection. New life goals, and the motivation to attain them, emerged in the process. The project was so well received by students and teachers alike that HKFYG will soon extend it to other schools. Hong Kong Melody Makers Season Opening Concerts 2012
With Hong Kong Arts Development Council support, the HKFYG Hong Kong Melody Makers will hold two Season Opening Concerts this autumn. At the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall on the public holiday of 23 October, The Hong Kong Melody Makers 2012 Choral Space will offer a new experience of contemporary choral and jazz pop music, in exciting collaboration with the HKIEd Jazz Ensemble and the HKIEd Chorus. The second concert is on 17 November at Sha Tin Town Hall Cultural Activities Hall, to be followed by the Hong Kong a cappella Contest 2012 on Friday and Saturday, 23-24 November, sponsored by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. Funding from Hongkong Bank Foundation for Innovation and Technology Scholarship Award Scheme
For the third year in succession, The Hongkong Bank Foundation has made a generous donation for the Innovation and Technology Scholarship Award Scheme, launched in 2011. The donation will be matched by the Innovation and Technology Fund. 25 talented science students, nominated by their respective university Vice-Chancellors or Presidents, will benefit from related mentorship and attachment programmes. M21 launches Youth Micro-Movie Competition with support from MTR Corporation, 7-Eleven, Woodhouse and Vita Green
M21 launched this competition to encourage youthful creativity and multimedia skills and to provide a showcase platform. Entrants can win prizes on themes provided by partners, MTR Corporation Ltd, 7-Eleven, Woodhouse, and Vita Green. Their films might also be shown on mass media or used as official promotional videos for these companies. M21 is providing the venue, resources and training. YOUTH HONG KONG September 2012: Youth, crime and punishment
Rehabilitation of young offenders is the focus of the new issue, available this week. Articles explore common youth crimes such as shoplifting and drug related offences. Young people say why they got involved in crime and the consequences they have experienced, including the 'short, sharp, shock' treatment in some of the territory's correctional institutions. Punishment and the effects of sentences are dealt with in interviews, and the system of institutional rehabilitation is explained. Compensated dating and triad-influenced crime are included in this fascinating issue.

Ping Wo Fund supports HKFYG Youth Wellness Centre gambling research
Findings of a survey on gambling, conducted from February-April this year by the HKFYG's Youth Wellness Centre, have now been published. The report reveals that 46.5% of the 926 adolescent respondents had gambled in the past 12 months, 3.5% could be classified as probable problem gamblers, and 0.9% could be classified as probable pathological gamblers. Over half of the participants regarded gambling as leisure, and over a third found it fun or stress reducing. 16.7% reported having a parent with gambling problem.
