Olympics: more than sports
Yesterday, in a London pool, Michael Phelps was crowned the greatest Olympian of all time. This was because, over the course of his Olympic Games (a total of 12 years) he has won 19 Olympic medals: 15 gold, two silver and two bronze. The most anyone has ever achieved and he still has three more events to go!
As for all participants, the Phelps story has a lesson for all young people. Getting through life is not easy. Neither is getting into an Olympic squad. But the starting point is the same: having a dream, whether academic, professional or even personal, and then pursuing it with commitment and perseverance. To succeed in today's world, young people need to know the value of working hard and being disciplined enough to attain a goal. They need to seek a healthy lifestyle and learn to work with others, respect their competitors and adversaries. They need to give the best of themselves in all circumstances, learning to share and learning to care.
This is what has sustained the modern Olympics for more than 100 years: that people aspire to be the best that they can be and make themselves, their families and their nations proud.
Not all of us can win a gold medal (even Michael Phelps failed in his first three events), but with a similar spirit, drive and determination, anyone can be a 'winner'. |

It prepares participants aged 18-35 to be successful entrepreneurs with competitive edge. The course covers 8 key topics, including accounting, marketing strategies and media promotion. Experience Tour: Tai O stilt-house culture with HKFYG Summer Programme
Tai O is famous for its traditional fishing village and picturesque stilt-houses built over the water. A 2-day, 1-night camp tour on Thursday 23 and Friday 24 August includes a variety of activities including visits to handcrafted souvenir makers and tastes of traditional Tai O cuisine. HKFYG NEIGHBOURHOOD First large-scale community-based project builds social capital with support from Community Investment and Inclusion Fund
A 3-year grant of $2,657,300 has been awarded by the Community Investment and Inclusion Fund for HKFYG's NEIGHBOURHOOD First - Community Based Project. It incorporates leadership training, volunteer services, online connectivity and regional collaboration. With young people leading the way, the project aims to bring the community together, cultivate a strong, helping and caring culture between neighbours. Highlights include 100 youth-led NEIGHBOURHOOD teams which strengthen social cohesion and the NEIGHBOURHOOD website: at neighbourhoodfirst.hk, providing useful information for sharing and mutual support. My English Drama Society funded by Social Welfare Department at Kin Sang Youth S.P.O.T.
My English Drama Society is being funded with a grant of HK$20,000 from the Social Welfare Department. It will be a highlight at Kin Sang Youth S.P.O.T. from autumn 2012 to spring 2013. It will include 18 free sessions taught by native English teachers on the International Phonetic Alphabet, English drama and public performances of plays.
