Spending and saving
In today's materialist environment, it might come as a surprise to learn that young people tend to save, and that they start before their parents did.* This is something to be commended.
However, this positive attitude towards earning and expenditure cannot be taken for granted. With the endless bombardment of advertising aimed at a younger and younger demographic, the temptation to spend sometimes just to keep up with their peers is very strong. According to a recent book,** young people equate happiness with the acquisition and the possession of goods, particularly branded products.
This is something to heed: contentment cannot be bought. Neither can status simply because of consumption patterns. Security for the future, on the other hand, can be acquired with sensible financial planning.
Therefore, what young people must be conscious of is that savings and spending can go hand-in-hand, if balanced and budgeted.

HKFYG Youth Volunteer Network releases new incentives with "20 Service Hours Campaign"
| To recognize and encourage voluntary work by young people, HKFYG's Youth Volunteer Network (VNET) offers' premiums' such as stamps, magnets, folders and postcards to those who complete VNET's 20 Service Hours Campaign. This is being paralleled in 2012 with a new form of appreciation for young volunteers who contribute 50 service hours in the community from 1 January-31 December 2012. HKFYG Summer Youth Programme launched and registration begun
A wide range of activities is included in the Federation's annual Summer Programme, with up to 4,500 programmes to choose from in 2012. Highlights this year include a 2-day-1-night tour to Tai O fishing village on Lantau Island. Young people can also learn how to run a café at PS Café, find out about organic farming with Summer Learning Master and share musical ambitions with Form Your Own Band, Full details can be found at syp.u21.hk and registration can be done online at the youth portal uportal.hk.

HKFYG Youth SPOTs in Tai Po District Dragon Boat Competition
The Organizing Committee of the Tai Po District Dragon Boat Competition 2012 has invited the Federation to take part in this year's races and one heat will be named The HKFYG Cup. 7 teams of youth members from the 21 HKFYG Youth SPOTs will take part in the Tung Ng Festival on 23 June plus a staff team.

Dragon 100 Young Chinese Leaders Forum 5-12 August 2012 destination Beijing and Tianjin
Selection of Chinese youth leaders aged 18-35 from all over the world for this year's Dragon 100 Young Chinese Leaders Forum in Beijing and Tianjin has begun. Tianjin, the port city for Beijing, was among the first of China's coastal cities open to the outside world. It is the centre of a new zone to balance the Shanghai-Guangzhou nexus with a planned model eco-city that has vibrant economic prospects. The 8-day programme, organized with support from the All China Youth Federation and Tianjin Youth Federation, begins in Hong Kong on 5 August and goes to Tianjin and Beijing from 8-12 August. It will include visits to major sites showing the development of mainland finance and economy, urban and town planning and creative industries. Deadline for nominations is 28 June. Transform Tomorrow Today, Hong Kong Student Science Project Competition 2012
This competition encourages students to demonstrate understanding of science and application of scientific knowledge. Enrolled students have visited university and industrial science departments to widen their exposure and the Initial Judging was on 12 May 2012 at Hong Kong Science Park. The Final Judging and Award Presentation Ceremony are in Hong Kong Science Park on 2 June 2012 with Guest of Honour Mr Johann Wong (Deputy Commissioner, Innovation and Technology Commission). Prof Kwan Hoi-shan (School of Life Sciences, Chinese University of Hong Kong) and Prof Benjamin W Wah (Provost, Chinese University of Hong Kong) are Head Judges for the Junior and Senior Divisions respectively. Zhongshan Sanxiang HKFYG Youth Training Centre now open
A mansion in Sanxiang Town, Zhongshan City was kindly donated to HKFYG by benefactor Mr Chui Pui Kun. Now transformed into a Youth Training Center (YTC), it opened officially last month. Accommodating over 40 people for overnight stays, it also has 2 multi-function rooms, a canteen and free WiFi. Bookings for a minimum of 16 participants, from schools and other organizations in Hong Kong, can be made up to one year in advance. Programmes include volunteering, cultural visits, for example to the nearby museum of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, visits to factories, photography and cycling tours. Tailor-made programmes and packages for schools and organizations are also available. Winners of Hong Kong Odyssey of the Mind Local Competitions go to World Finals
The local competitions were held at the Hong Kong Design Institute this year, with Mr John Chu Ka-yan, Founder and CEO, Centro Digital Pictures Ltd and Mr Alex Fung, Principal, Hong Kong Design Institute as Officiating Guests at the Opening Ceremony on 31 March 2012. Champion schools for the Vehicular Problem Division III and the Technical Problem Division II were STFA Lee Shau Kee College and Shatin Methodist College. Teams from St. Stephen's Girls' Primary School, POH Chan Kai Memorial College and St Paul's Co-educational College were winners of Divisions I-III respectively in the Performance Problem, and Queen's College won in Division III, Structural Problem. They are now taking part in the 2012 World Finals at the Iowa State University, USA.
