A cry for help online
Youth use the internet as their 24-hour platform for sharing every little aspect of their lives, including their ever-changing moods and emotions. This is true even for those who are depressed and, more worryingly, suicidal. Every minute counts when you find someone desperate online.
Ten days ago, a girl in her early 20s, desperately unhappy about her unresponsive boyfriend, wanted to take her own life. She sought solace by writing to an online forum. Scores of sympathetic replies flooded in. Federation Youthline counsellors went on alert and tried to track her down, but she remained secluded and uncontactable. We called the police and thankfully, tragedy was averted.
What this case highlights is that constant vigilance is needed by those who monitor online forums and blogs, not only to identify potential problems, but then to mobilize a response team into action. This requires an effective, multi disciplinary collaborative mechanism between social workers, police and internet service providers.
No matter how 'real' young people might believe their lives to be on the internet, the truth of the matter is that only real action in the real world can save lives. |

Innovation & Technology Scholarship Award Scheme winners announced
Full-time undergraduate winners of awards in this scheme, organized by HKFYG, supported by the Innovation & Technology Commission and sponsored by The Hongkong Bank Foundation, have commitment to innovate and break boundaries in science and technology. 25 scholarships of HK$150,000 will give them wider international exposure and help them obtain relevant industry experience. Winners HKFYG Standard Chartered Hong Kong English Public Speaking Contest 2012
At the finals of the HKFYG Standard Chartered Hong Kong English Public Speaking Contest on Saturday 14 April, Anselm Au Chak Sum won the Junior Division and Hubert Cruz was Champion in the Senior Division as well as the winner in the Audience Favourite Awards. Jimin Kang was the Audience Favourite in the Junior Division. This contest, co-organized with the English Speaking Union (HK) and sponsored by Standard Chartered Bank (HK) Ltd, is the largest of its kind in Hong Kong, with almost 2000 applications from 168 participating schools this year. Neighbourhood First rice-giving to ease pressure of rising food prices
HKFYG's Neighbourhood First community service teams will deliver rice and visit 2,800 household every month in the coming year to ease the burden on low-income families. This Friday, 27 April, a launch ceremony for the programme will take place with Guests of Honour, Mrs Anna Mak Chow Suk-har, Deputy Director (Services), Social Welfare Department, Mr Li Tak-hong, Wong Tai Sin District Council Chairman, Ms Lily Ng, District Social Welfare Officer for Wong Tai Sin/Sai Kung, Ms Angela Au of the Au Bak Ling Charity Trust and Mr Walter Chan Kar-lok, SBS JP, HKFYG council member. HSBC Youth Business Award 2012 recognizes talent and achievements with HSBC Business
The HSBC Youth Business Award 2012 will be launched on 29 April. The awards are organized by HKFYG's Youth Business Hong Kong (YBHK) and the sole sponsor is HSBC Business. Through the awards, YBHK and HSBC encourage young people to explore entrepreneurship as an alternative to other employment by recognizing the talent of innovative young start-ups and those who offers exceptional services with determination and creativity. 2012 Caring Companies bring community involvement into the spotlight

Beat Drugs Fund continues Healthy School Programme
A grant of over $460,000 has been made to HKFYG by the Beat Drugs Fund to continue its contributive work to the Healthy School Programme. Anti-drug programmes at the 18 secondary schools in Tai Po which took part in the Trial Scheme on School Drug Testing will be strengthened by the funding, with NGOs including HKFYG providing school social work services in the district. Arts Development Council takes a cappella to youth
A grant of $76,000 has been made to HKFYG by the Arts Development Council to promote a cappella to young people. Events will take place in October and November this year, including a choral concert, a tribute to classic Chinese pop, and a live fusion performance of drama, jazz, and state-of-the-art audio technology.
