Youth Matters

No such thing as 'easy' money

Gambling is really all about people wishing to make money as quickly and as effortlessly as possible. In economically difficult times, when job prospects are poor and the fear of being laid off is high, there tends to be a surge in this type of behavior.

But what is particularly disturbing is that gambling is not restricted to adults. According to interviews* with 4,000 students conducted by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, around 40% have gambled, among whom 30% say they did so before they were ten years old.

These alarming figures show a rising trend even since last September, when HKFYG's Youth Hong Kong magazine reported on the situation.** Because young people can go online to bet or place bets with smartphones, identifying and stopping these gamblers is not easy.

While all avenues to curb underage gambling must be pursued, what is required immediately is education, especially about the nature of luck. We need to inculcate sound habits in young people where the value of money is concerned, with positive reinforcement about the virtue of earning an honest living, budgeting and saving. There is no such thing as 'easy money' and the sooner young people learn this, the better.
