Hong Kong International a cappella Festival
Hong Kong International a cappella Festival begins this month
This is the second time the Federation has organized the Hong Kong International
a cappella Festival, designed to promote creative choral singing among the city's young people. The festival kicks off on 26 March at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium with strong support from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, Prince Jewellery and Watch Co, the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, Sino Group, Hopewell Holdings Ltd, Cathay Pacific Airways and the Leisure & Cultural Services Department. A host of creative, versatile performers will be on stage.

The programme is packed, not only with famous singers from the UK, the US, Japan and Sweden, but also with master classes and workshops that will take a cappella to the heart of the community. With the launch of a new A Cappella Centre during the festival, we are looking forward to the blossoming of this genre of singing in Hong Kong. Thank you to everyone who has helped us prepare for this inspiring event in the city's musical calendar.

Secondary students learn about poverty
Secondary students learn about poverty, disadvantaged ethnic minorities, street sleepers and deprived children on community programme with HKFYG Youth SPOTs
Young people's studies on poverty issues, enlightened through community exposure,
attracted nearly 400 secondary students and other youngsters to a special event on 26 February at Tsim Sha Tsui Kaifong Association Community Hall. The studies culminated in group presentations at multi-media stalls which were judged by Guests of Honour, The Hon Cheung Kwok-che (Member, Legislative Council, HKSAR), Mr Liu Ah-chuen ( Chairman of the Hong Kong Subsidized Secondary Schools Council) and Dr Timothy Chan ( Service Coordinator, Hong Kong Council of Social Services).

The programme was organized by 13 HKFYG Youth SPOTs in which 15 youth social exposure groups took part in studies in their own districts and localities. Issues they explored included the medical needs of the elderly, education, ethnic minorities, social relationships, street sleepers, housing, deprived children, CSSA, and poverty in the community environment. These warm-hearted youth learned under the guidance of the social workers at the Youth SPOTs and their presentations revealed innovative spirit and commitment. HKFYG Youth poll series 203: Pessimistic views on the 2011 budget and the future
525 young people responded to the poll which took place from 23 January to 17 February 2011. Major findings included the view that government should give hand-outs if public coffers were full. Over 40% believed that redressing lingering social problems connected with an ageing population and poverty should be given top priority. Almost a quarter said that the Government cared for them most, followed by social welfare organizations and charity groups. But when asked to rate Government's performance it reached just over 5 only on a scale of 0-10.

Food price rises and rising costs of transport were the two major sources of inflationary pressure felt by young people. Regarding the future, nearly a third were worried about housing, and close to a quarter were concerned about employment / career prospects. Over 47% did not believe Hong Kong society held a bright future for them. For more details, call Sharon, tel 3755 7039.
