Youth Matters
Drug Abuser
HKFYG reaches out - the story of a young drug abuser

One of the Federation' s core services focuses on youth at risk. Often, these young people can be found loitering in parks, playgrounds and internet cafés late at night, where outreach social workers make contact. One young person who was contacted in this was Ah Wai, a 17 year-old from a working-class family. Ah Wai started taking drugs, first because of peer pressure and then because of an unhappy love affair.

Ray, an outreaching social worker, first met Ah Wai first hanging out in a park at 2a.m. Seeing his thin and wasted condition, and realizing how miserable Ah Wai was, Ray gently persuaded him to go for a medical check-up at Kwai Chung Hospital. It was only then that Ah Wai finally understood the damage and harm that drugs could do. With the encouragement of Ray, Ah Wai gave up drugs, became a volunteer and even learnt how to break dance. He eventually settled down and began to work hard on his studies.

Ah Wai still sees the Federation social worker who has a counselling role at his school. He is beginning to feel like part of the community again and has made many new friends in the outreach break dancing group. Now he stays away from drugs. He has discovered a new direction for his life and has adopted a new set of values that motivate him to live a clean and healthy life.
