HKFYG at Hong Kong Book Fair
HKFYG launches ten books and hosts creativity talks at Book Fair
Each year, the Hong Kong Book Fair attracts many thousands of youngsters, giving HKFYG a marvellous opportunity to connect with them in an informal, cultural setting. This year, our own special highlights include the launch of ten new books and a series of fascinating talks on creativity by guest speakers.

The talks, by well known people from a range of professions, include cross-over topics such as green living, travel and communication. Interactive online radio sessions with the speakers will be recorded by HKFYG and then aired on uChannel@Hong Kong Book Fair to reach a wider audience. For more details, see our News section.

The HKFYG booth is number 1A-B37 in the Book Pavilion in Hall 1, where more details of the talks, and copies of all current, special price HKFYG publications on counselling, youth business and employment, parenting, leadership training and the LEAD project, can be found. Don't miss it!

HKFYG publications on counselling, youth business and employment, parenting, leadership training and the LEAD project will be on sale at special discount

Summer School for Effective Leadership
The School starts on 22 July for the third consecutive year, with The Hon Carrie Lam, Secretary for Development, as Guest of Honour at the opening ceremony. This HKFYG Leadership 21 collaborative project with the General Education Unit at HKU gives 121 students a taste of life on campus. They take part in a range of activities including lectures, leadership workshops, training in team building and community involvement. More information from Judy, tel 2169 0255.

Hong Kong Youth Leadership Forum 2010
The forum, on 16 July, was attended by 1000 of Hong Kong's
young leaders. A keynote address was given by Mr Michael Geoghegan, CBE, Group Chief Executive, HSBC Holdings plc, Chairman, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Ltd. He was followed by four panel speakers, The Hon. Ronald Arculli, GBS, JP, Non-official Member of The Executive Council, Independent Non-executive Chairman, Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd; The Hon. Professor KC Chan, SBS, JP, Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, HKSARG, Dr Raymond Kuo-fung Ch'ien, GBS, JP, Chairman, MTR Corporation Ltd & Chairman, Hang Seng Bank Ltd, and Mr Anthony Wu Ting-yuk, GBS, JP, Chairman of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, the Bauhinia Foundation Research Centre and the Hospital Authority.

LEAD Creativity Showcase: Get Creative!
On 17 July at Hong Kong Science Park, Mr Alan Siu, JP, Deputy Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development, officiated at the annual LEAD Showcase. LEAD's aim is to educate with technology and design, plus the integration of science, engineering, multimedia, arts and music. More than 300 students from 7 primary schools, 6 secondary schools and 3 youth centres exhibited their creative work, including motors, lights, sound effects and sensors of the PicoCricket, a microcomputer developed by the MIT Media Lab, and Scratch interactive software. These included the ambitious "Time Travelling Machine", the exciting "Yacht Adventures" and the helpful "Electric Intelligent Broomstick" and "Homework Transporter," as well as a thoughtful escalator specifically designed for handicapped people. HKFYG's Hong Kong Melody Makers'
great success at World Choir Games
The Hong Kong Melody Makers, HKFYG's own youth choir, have just come home triumphant from the World Choir Games in Shaoxing on the mainland. They
competed with choirs from all over the world and won gold awards in the Champion Class [Category 7] for Mixed Chamber Choirs and the Open Class [Category 12] Musica Contemporanea. The awards were a gold medal and a gold diploma, respectively, for their achievement. Well done!

Dell sponsors HKFYG primary school youth for competition in Shanghai
A donation from Dell Inc is helping primary pupils at the HKFYG Lee Shau Kee Primary School take part in a First Lego League competition in Shanghai from 29 July-3 August. The China Youth Development Foundation is also a partner in this programme. The children will visit the Shanghai World Expo and participate in exchange activities with other youngsters during their stay. Contact Iris, tel 3755 7107 for more information.


YEN Tailor-made project for young workers with City Super
The HKFYG Youth Employment Network has just begun a new sales assistant project with Citysuper as part of the Labour Department's Youth Pre-employment Training Programme and Youth Work Experience and Training Scheme. The project is tailor-made for young people aged 18- 24 and gives them the opportunity to gain job experience in customer services. It began earlier this month with a 48-hour pre-employment core training course. 6 months on-the-job training follow, from July to December. Contact Chi-wai tel 3113 7999 for details.

The Ping Wo Fund has approved a grant of HK$296,500 for an educational project for young people called A Close Encounter with Gambling. It will run for two years at the HKFYG Youth Wellness Centre. Contact Anita, tel 3755 7068 for more details.


Federation's Hong Kong Youth Dance supported by YOU‧C1000
The Joint School Dance Competition 2010 has been launched by the Federation with sponsorship from YOU‧C1000. 77 secondary school dance teams have enrolled and Stephy Tang, a talented young singer, is an ambassador for the event. She will also be performing for us at the finals on 29 August at the World Trade Centre. Instructors from most of the famous dancing schools in Hong Kong have been invited as judges. Is our competitiveness under threat?

Results of an HKFYG youth poll published on 15 July.

Major findings of the poll were that over half (51.5%) took the view that Hong Kong people did not have any sense of crisis concerning the city's competitiveness. On the other hand, almost 70% said that the competitiveness of the youngsters nowadays is less than that of the older generation.

Respondents rated their ability for teamwork an average 6.6 of points on a scale of 0-10. They rated their ability to communicate effectively at 6.44 points whereas problem-solving and independent learning scored 6.18 points and 6.02 points respectively. For creativity, the average rating respondents gave themselves was 5.51, the lowest of all.

Over 60% named Shanghai as the city posing the greatest competitive challenge to Hong Kong, far more than any other options such as Singapore (16.9%), Shenzhen (4.2%) or Beijing (4.0%). Most respondents said there were many threats to their competitiveness, including too many talented youngsters (24.7%), lack of motivation to make progress (18.5%), and lack of self-confidence.
