Summer holidays mean summer temptations
Statistics collected by HKFYG's community-based Project Shine, run by our outreach teams in
Tsuen Wan and Kwai Tsing Districts, show that most young people have their first experience of drugs when they are 13-16 years old. Over 50% of these youngsters claim to have friends with triad connections, and for over 30% the experience takes place during the summer holidays. With the end of term imminent, concern is mounting.

The HKFYG Community Anti-drug Teams urge parents to pay close attention to their children and be well aware of the risks. They give the example of 17 year-old Ka-pik, who left school and became addicted to drugs two years ago. Her weight dropped from 45kg to 37kg. "Family quarrels have been frequent ever since. My brother even gave up his job to help me." The Federation's anti-drug services took care of her with tailor-made, multi-disciplinary counselling and group therapy education. Now she is determined to stay away from drugs.

Contact Leo Man, Worker in-charge of Project Shine, tel 2487 6151 to find out more about Project Shine.
