Internet education: HKFYG BeNetwise resource kit for schools goes out next week
So many parents and teachers are struggling to understand how
important the internet is in the lives of today's youngsters. To many of them it is a very unfamiliar, sometimes bewildering world. To help them cope, the HKFYG's BeNetwise project has produced a resource kit for teachers and social workers to use in the classroom.

The kit contains handbooks, activity worksheets, video clips and PowerPoint slides. It outlines the relationship between the internet and teenage growth, internet pop culture and the basics of internet security. Topical issues include the phenomenon of cyber-addiction, cyber-bullying, internet friendship, internet crime and copyright infringement.

6,500 of these kits will be distributed to primary and secondary schools next week after a briefing session on Monday May 31, from 2.30-4pm in Room 1002, HKFYG Building with Federation and Education Bureau staff , as well as an exchange forum on current problems with a social worker and a teacher.

Project Start the Engine with Digital
Solidarity Fund adds oil to help young night drifters get started
The HKFYG outreach team goes to street corners, parks and cyber cafes between 10pm and 6am, seeking the youngsters who hang out there. These are the HKFYG's Extended Services to Young Night Drifters. Many drop out early from secondary school, end up on the margins of society and are ill-equipped for the job market. Nonetheless, they have latent strengths and talents. This project, sponsored by the Digital Solidarity Fund, meets their needs. With mobile technology and a seven-seater van, we reach out to them and offer instant career counselling, with midnight mock interviews, video resume creation and job vacancy search techniques. Online social networking is part of the follow-up. All this gets them going in the right direction on paths towards fruitful careers. Contact Ken Lee, tel 6131 2225 for more information.
