Unemployment: measures to cope with the crisis to come
The combined will power of government, the business sector,
non-government organizations, schools and families will be needed to cope with the impending crisis of youth unemployment. It is already standing at 19.3% for the 15-19 year-olds. Yesterday, the University of Hong Kong released figures for graduate vacancies, 25% fewer than last year, and a warning that hopes for starting salaries would not be met.

As the entire community gears up, with job creation, job preservation and retention schemes, we must remember not only those with good qualifications. Their initial hopes may be dashed, but eventually economic upturn will happen.

For low achievers, the under-qualified and underprivileged, life will be much harder, for much longer.

Support our Shoulder to Shoulder initiative, the central data station for job-seekers or the info-bank for vocational training. We also offer a counselling service for employees, a job hotline on 2777 0309 and MSN service for young people in need.

Partners, they need you too. Join us. We can work together to pull them through.
