Jobs and hope: let us help youth in the crash fallout
With the financial market crash,
prospects for youth employment have become very uncertain. Choosing the right skills and acquiring relevant work experience is more essential than ever. All young people need help with this. Vocational training, job creation and work experience schemes can make a vital investment in their future but they have to be carefully coordinated by both trainers and employers.

HKFYG's partners in government schemes such as YWETS include Ocean Park, the Airport Authority, ToysRus and McDonalds. They play an important role, offering job skills, pay that brings a sense of self-worth, and the prospect of better to follow. Underprivileged youth are the
Young workers
most in need since it's often difficult for them to find suitable jobs. We always need new input from the business sector. Together we can refine, extend and diversify. In the coming months this will be an increasingly urgent task.

Just published
A poll survey has just been completed on the young's expectations of the policy address in the wake of the financial crisis and its negative impact on their plans for the future.

Over 40% realised that the market crash had serious implications for their job prospects. The majority of the respondents said their families had suffered losses of between 20 and 30% as a result of the fall in value of stocks (31.6%), investments in MPF (30.3%) or reduced value of property (20.9%).

Nearly 60% were unhappy about the government's handling of recent problems such as the financial crisis and the melamine milk scandal. They called for priority to be given to stabilising the monetary markets, calming inflation and improving health and hygiene. Nearly 80% were in favour of the setting up of a business start-up loan scheme or the restoration of the Home Starter Loan scheme.
